I've been working on a new book for the past couple of weeks, tentatively subtitled "5 Big Ideas That Will (Probably) Shape Your Work In The Emerging Future," which is one of the reasons I haven't been doing much blogging lately. But I have been doing a fair bit of surfing other blogs and online articles. Here are a few you might find interesting, too:
"The End of Management," Alan Murray, Wall Street Journal - It's worth noting that even the venerable WSJ recognizes that business-as-usual is dead. In the emerging future leaders/managers will need to let go of a command-and-control approach and, instead, learn to cultivate collaboration and creativity. This article might be a good conversation starter for your leadership team.
"How Social Networking Has Changed Society," Lisa Hoover, PC World - The best part of this article may be the title. Social networking HAS changed society, in a variety of ways, many of them for the better. First off, it's making it possible for people to work in more participative ways. How has it changed the way you work? Take this article to your leadership team and ask them that question. If your organization doesn't have an answer to that question, you're in trouble.
"Command and Control is Dead," from blogger Antony Mayfield - Good post. Best thing about it are the links to interviews and video of John Chambers, CEO of Cisco, a global business that is actually working in more decentralized, participative, and renewable ways. Follow them. Chambers' story will be especially helpful if you're working in an organization where people are saying "you're just dreaming" or dismiss you as being too naive when you suggest that it is possible to do life and work in new ways.
Any post from author and thought-leader, Daniel Pink - I'm a big fan, what can I say? Even if all you do is glance through his collection of "emotionally-intelligent signage" (i.e., playful signs that pack a punch) and use it to spark a conversation with your team about what and how you're communicating with people, it'll be worth a visit to his blog.
Steve Jobs & Guy Kawasaki: Powerpoint best practices, from the always interesting folks at Hubspot - This is one of my favorite blogs. If your team had a hard time explaining how social media has changed the way you work, these folks will inspire and equip you to get moving. They have a whole stable of white papers, e-books, and other resources that are helpful, too. Their main focus is inbound internet marketing (which covers social media, websites, blogging, etc.) but, like the post I've linked to here, they address all kinds of "technical" issues in a way that (mostly) makes sense even to those of us who don't speak geek.
OK, back to work on the book - I'm doing a final edit this week and should have it ready for you by the end of the month. In the meantime, if you get a chance, let me know what "big ideas" are shaping the way your work is changing.
