Our friend Rochelle, the Right Now coach, is encouraging her friends and clients to "do work that matters right now!" Awesome, right?! Well, this week Rochelle posted 8 rules for writing fiction by Kurt Vonnegut on her Facebook page. Rule #6 is this:
Be a sadist. Now matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them -- in order that the reader may see what they are made of.Which got us thinking: What are you made of? When really awful things happen to you, how do you respond?
- Who am I?
- What really matters to me?
- What do I want my legacy here on this earth to be?
- Why am I here?
- No, I mean, why am I here really?
Steve, who offers "personal development for smart people" (how fun is that?!), has a great post on how to articulate your life's purpose in 20 minutes.
For a more in depth exploration, check out "Reclaiming the V Word: Renewing Life From It's Vocational Core" by our own Dave Daubert and Tana Kjos. They'll help you articulate your personal purpose, principles, and sense of direction in under 150 pages.
You might also want to consider getting yourself an ARE coach to help you get reconnected with who you are and what you have for the sake of doing what matters...especially in the toughest times. (Ask us about our recession specials – and about how we can help the organization you care about get clear about it's purpose, too!)
Authors make bad stuff happen to their characters for the sake of an interesting story. In real life, s*#t just happens. What are you going to do about it? You can let it mess with you. Or you can let it help you become a more interesting, more centered, more purposeful person.
In any and all circumstances, do what matters.
