One of the places the A.R.E. team provides assistance to people is in transitions as they take on a new role. A new bishop takes office and wants help. A pastor starts work in a new position and wants to be sure to get off on the right foot. An entrepreneur is starting a new business and wants to make a splash. A school system is rerooting its programs in an urban school district and wants to develop a new culture. We provide coaching and consultation situations like these and always the question is the same: How can I get started and make a real difference in this new role?

As 2009 unfolds we are seeing lots of things about how to make it a better year. While traveling, one member of the A.R.E. team saw the US News & World Report cover story – “Fifty Ways to Improve Your Life in 2009.” Look it up and you’ll find a list of fifty things that you can do to make life better in the next year. This is surprisingly simple to do.
But that doesn't mean it's easy.

The amount of knowledge in the world is increasing at record paces (some estimates are that the amount of known information doubles every 2-4 years!). For those of us whose work centers on connecting with people, this means dramatic changes in how people work and how they get information. If you are still doing things the way you did even five years ago, you are probably AT LEAST TWO CYCLES OUT OF DATE! Are you making the changes you need to keep up?

As the New Year begins there is an air of solemnity all around us. The Israel and Palestine are at war (again). The US is still involved in Iraq and Afghanistan. The economy is in the dumps (seemingly just about everywhere). And while the list could be extended you get the idea. As we ask about plans for the coming year there is the sound of caution in the voices of many of the people we talk to in the church and business world.
