Years ago at a clergy conference I was invited to be part of as a lay panelist to address Stewardship, I conducted a straw poll.

In private conversation I asked pastors from the ELCA and the LCMS, when they hear John 10:14 do they see themselves as sheep - or as shepherd?

All but one pastor (all males) saw themselves as the shepherd for "my flock".

When I followed up (with ELCA pastors) asking how that meshed with the idea of a "priesthood of all believers" I was mostly met with uncomfortable silence.

I am uncertain how we will ever allow pastors to be fully human - much less expect less than an abusive 80 hr/wk workload from them - until we get a better grip on what it means to BE a pastor.

Teasing apart the idea of pastors being "especially called" from the concept of parish ministry as a particular job - and being a pastor is finally that - a JOB - might be a starting point.

I suspect the biggest thing is that the roll of pastor is changing.
Old concepts and values of what pastor's did are not the same as they were, nor are the responsibilities of the lay the same as they once were. Many things that pastor's do are probibly better done by the lay, and yes their are things that the lay dont do well that pastors should.
One thing though is that, both the pastor and the lay MUST work as a team, at times merging in and out of what each can do. No hard and fast lines of separation can be used anymore to define what each is to do.
